Kapwa Rising Mural Project is a community-informed mural that weaves together the untold stories and voices of artists, educators, mental health advocates and community members from the Filipino community that resides in the South of Market district in San Francisco, California. 

Using meditation, writing prompts, drawing, drumming, and discussion, we collectively re-member the core Filipinx value of Kapwa, or shared self, meaning to see yourself in another.

How we can amplify the value of KAPWA to talk more freely about mental health and promote community wellbeing?

Lead muralist Samantha "Sami See" Schilf and Co-lead muralist Monica Magtoto then designed and painted a mural to reflect the essence of the conversations with over 70 people, ages 12-60+, from 5 different South of Market and San Francisco, Filipino-centric Organizations. The mural, was installed from April 9 - 21, 2018 at Mestiza Restaurant (4th and Bryant, San Francisco), the first in the official SOMA Pilipinas Cultural Heritage District.

The mural project was featured in the Asian Pacific Islander Cultural Center annual festival and led to multiple collaborations with various artists who also created new works surrounding the theme of Kapwa. The works were shown at Kapwa Konnections a visual art and multimedia exhibition at the Mission Cultural Center in San Francisco, CA.
